The concept for this difficult play is that of director George Ferencz who has teamed up with jazz composer Max Roach to create a swirling fulminating 90-minute ensemble piece
Roachs score brilliantly punctuates the fights, underscoring blows with drumbeats, lending abstraction to the plays violence, yet keeping its naturalism intact. Without ever seeming to overdo the idea, Ferencz also extends ONeills animal imagery to other characters in the play
lasting impressions, exceptional work.

Overall, Ferencz is right
to treat The Hairy Ape like a classic or period piece would be to kill it. In Ferenczs hands, its provocative and insistent- loud and raucous and impossible to ignore. The years have not worn it down. It is new.
